I'm the midst of preparing Sunday's sermon, which is on Revelation 21, with a focus on All Saints' Day. While hunting through resources, I came across this quote from Ellsworth Kalas, who is currenty the interim president of Asbury Theological Seminary. I took a preaching course from Dr. Kalas, and he is a wonderful man of God, a fantastic preacher and teacher, and he has a great sense of humor. He's old enough to be my grandfather, but he has the vigor of someone half his age. I wanted to share this quote with you. It's from a chapter on Revelation:
"...It’s especially exciting if you’ve been traveling with me all of this year as we’ve gone through the whole grand sweep of the biblical story. You’ve seen, as we’ve gone along, that we human beings have a remarkable penchant for getting into trouble. Give us an Eden, and we’ll find a way to be evicted; wash the world clean with a flood, and we’ll soon dirty it up again; find us a chosen people, and they will soon enough make us wonder why they were chosen; send us the Son of God, and we will crucify him. We have such ability for messing things up that it’s clear we need an absolutely new beginning."
And here's another good one, from the same chapter:
"Whatever the score today, whatever the state of our world or of our lives, Revelation tells us that in the end God will win, and all will be well. The conclusion of the story is certain. And it is good."
